The Regional Committee on Neogene Atlantic Stratigraphy (RCANS) is a research Group integrated in the Subcommission on Neogene Stratigraphy of the IUGS. This Group was constituted in Spain (Barcelona, Nov. 1990) during the IX RCMNS Congress. The first President was Prof. J. Alvinerie (Univ. Bordeaux, France). The following Presidents have been in chronological order Prof. T. Antunes (Univ. Lisboa, Portugal), Prof J. Civis (Univ Salamanca), Prof. J. Pais (Univ. Nova Lisboa, Portugal, dead in 2016), Prof. J.A. González-Delgado (Univ. Salamanca, Spain).

The aim of the research activities is the multidisciplinary study of the Neogene of the marine and continental Atlantic realms and the relationships with the general Earth History. The Group is open to all Atlantic specialists of Earth and Life Sciences (Stratigraphy, Paleontology, Paleogeography, Paleoceanography, Geodinamics, Mineralogy, Geochemistry and others) and pretends to contribute to develop in a coordinate way the different studies on the Neogene Atlantic basins, both continental and marine, without losing sight of the coexisting Quaternary examples as key for the interpretation of Neogene cases. One singular topic is focussed on the analysis of Atlantic volcanic islands developed during Neogene times. The project is open to researchers of different countries. In the short to medium term it contemplates the possibility to develop an updated synthesis of Neogene and associated Quaternary basins on both sides of the Atlantic.

The RCANS regularly organizes international meetings (Congresses and Interim-Colloquiums). The following meetings have taken place:

1992: First Congress RCANS, held in Lisbon (Portugal, Oct.1992);

1994: RCANS Interim-Colloquium, held in Tours (France, May. 1994);
